THE PULP CALENDAR: August 2
Take away the suffocating banner on top and this 1941 Western Story would look a lot like a 1939 Western Story thanks to H. W. Scott's gimmicky through-the-knothole cover. Kenneth Gilbert headlines with a 40-page novella, "Desperation Trail," while Seth (Frank Richardson Pierce) Ranger continues his serial Boothill Bonanza. Two writers who'd be better known as novelists in the years to come, Peter Dawson and Norman A. Fox, contribute short stories, as do Ray Nafziger and B. Bristow Green. Dawson gives us this issue's most enigmatic title, "The Long-Eared Smoke Pole." Make of that what you will.
